✅ What is a T-money card?
A T-money card is a prepaid transportation card that can be used on public transportation in Korea, including subways, buses, and taxis.
If you’ve used something like a transit card in the U.S. (for example, metro or city bus cards), the idea is very similar — you load money onto the card in advance and tap it when you ride.
✅ Why You’ll Be Using a T-money Card in Korea
Most Koreans today use debit or credit cards that already have T-money functionality built in.
However, for U.S. service members stationed in Korea, creating a Korean debit card usually requires opening a Korean bank account, which many do not do during their stay.
Because of that, you will most likely be using a standalone T-money card to get around Korea during your time here.
✅ How to Buy a T-money Card
Getting a T-money card is very easy.
You can walk into any convenience store in Korea and ask the cashier for a T-money card.
The card itself usually costs around $3–4 USD.
If you’re not familiar with Korean convenience stores yet, don’t worry — you can go to GS25, 7-Eleven, or CU.

Any one of these stores will sell T-money cards at the counter.
✅ How to Recharge (Add Money to) Your T-money Card
Once you have your T-money card, the next important thing to know is how to recharge it.
Because T-money is a prepaid card, you must add money to it before using it.
Just like buying the card, recharging can be done at the counter of any convenience store nationwide.
⚠️ Important: T-money cards can only be recharged with cash.
You must tell the cashier that you want to recharge your T-money card and hand them cash.
Recharge is not possible with:
- Credit cards
- Debit cards
- Bank transfers
Make sure to remember this — cash only.
✅ Important Things to Keep in Mind
A T-money card is not linked to any personal account such as a bank account, Google account, or phone number.
This means if you lose the card, you cannot recover the remaining balance.
Because of this, it’s recommended that you:
- Keep around 140,000 KRW (about $100 USD) on the card
- Recharge with another ~$100 only when the balance starts running low
This way, even if the card is lost, your financial loss stays limited.
